The Tenses

 

Meanings:

              Tense = Time

 

Kinds of Tense:              

There are three kinds of tenses:

  1. Present Tense
  2. Past Tense
  3. Future Tense

 

Use of Auxiliary Verbs:

Auxiliary verbs are used to express the tense. However, modal verbs are used express prediction, ability, possibility, etc 

 

There are two kinds of auxiliary verbs:

  1. Primary Auxiliary Verbs: is, am, are, was, were, do, does, did, has, have, had
  2. Modal Auxiliary Verbs: will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might, used to, must, need, dare, ought to

 

Structures of Tense:             

There are four structures of each tense:

  1. Simple (Indefinite)
  2. Continuous
  3. Perfect
  4. Perfect Continuous

 

Structure of Present Tense:             

         1. Simple Present Tense

             Subject + V1 (s/es/ies) + Object + Complement

         2. Present Continuous Tense

             Subject + is/am/are + V4 + Object + Complement

         3. Present Perfect Tense

             Subject + has/have + V3 + Object + Complement

         4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

             Subject + has/have + been + V4 + Object + Complement

 

Structure of Past Tense:             

         1. Simple Past Tense

             Subject + V2 + Object + Complement

         2. Past Continuous Tense

             Subject + was/were + V4 + Object + Complement

         3. Past Perfect Tense

             Subject + had + V3 + Object + Complement

         4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

             Subject + had + been + V4 + Object + Complement

 

 Structure of Future Tense:             

         1. Simple Future Tense

             Subject + will/shall + V1 + Object + Complement

         2. Future Continuous Tense

             Subject + will/shall + be + V4 + Object + Complement

         3. Future Perfect Tense

              Subject + will/shall + have + V3 + Object + Complement

         4. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

             Subject + will/shall + have + been + V4 + Object + Complement
